Week 15 Results (With Measurements!)

Another week, more results! This time with measurements. We are doing measurements every five weeks now, but it has been seven weeks since we last took them

Katie
Current Weight: -33.4 lbs. (This week: -1.4 lbs.)
Bust: -2.5" (These last seven weeks: -0.375")
Chest: -2.0" (These last seven weeks: -0.125")
Waist: -4.5" (These last seven weeks: -3.0")
Hips: -4.75" (These last seven weeks: -1.25")
Thigh: -1.75" (These last seven weeks: -0.5")
Upper Arm: -1.5" (These last seven weeks: -1.125")
Total Inches Lost: -17.0" (These last seven weeks: -6.375")

Tony
Current Weight: -40.4 lbs. (This week: -2.4 lbs.)
Neck: -1.25" (These last seven weeks: -0.375")
Chest: -4.0" (These last seven weeks: -0.25")
Waist: -5.5" (These last seven weeks: -4.25")
Hips: -4.25" (These last seven weeks: -1.75")
Thigh: -5.75" (These last seven weeks: -2.25")
Upper Arm: -2.0" (These last seven weeks: 0.0")
Total Inches Lost: -22.75 (These last seven weeks: -8.875")

At some point, we are going to have to take new pictures because these pictures are starting to no longer represent our looks! When we started this, Tony had suggested we take a picture similar to this one (first photo on the page) from our engagement shoot, so you can see the difference. I'd like to wait awhile longer before we do that, since I don't think the difference will be that pronounced at this point. Maybe once we're both past 50 lbs. We'll see!

I met my exercise goal again, so I'm going to continue with it, but this time it will be back to two days a week for 30 minutes each time. Eventually I will increase to three days a week, four days a week, etc., but for now two days a week is the most doable for me. I am still working on making this a habit, so I don't want to set a difficult goal this early in the game.

Later this week, I will post about other things we have changed to make the lower calorie intake easier. Stay tuned!

Week 14 Results

This post is so late for a couple reasons. The main one is that I stayed at my parents' house until Tuesday evening so we did not do our weigh-in until Wednesday. The secondary reason is I didn't have a chance to write the post until right now because I have been busy with interviews the last two days!! I had an in person interview yesterday morning at Company A, then an in person interview at Company B this morning, followed by an unexpected phone screen interview for Company C, and then an in person interview with other employees at Company A late this afternoon. I have to go back to Company A tomorrow morning to fill out an application; I may hear about that job as early as tomorrow afternoon!

Here are our results!

Katie
Current Weight: -32.0 lbs. (This week: -1.8 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -38.0 lbs. (This week: -2.0 lbs.)

So we did pretty well! We had a few high calorie days over the holiday weekend. We celebrated my mom's and my sister's girlfriend's birthdays on Monday night and that involved an ice cream sundae bar. Let's just say that day was pretty terrible calorie-wise and we'll leave it at that!

I did meet my exercise goal last week. I am going to try to exercise at least once for 30 minutes between today and Monday. I have reduced it to one time because there are only a few days left until Monday, and trying to go with twice would just set myself up for failure. I promise I will bring back the twice a week exercise goal next week!

Next week's post will include measurements, now that we are doing them every 5 weeks. It will have been 7 weeks since the last time we took measurements; I am excited to see them since I know I've lost inches.

(Sort of) exciting news for me. For the last two years or so, I have been sized out of Lane Bryant. Lane Bryant goes up to size 28, and I have been a 30 or 32 (if not higher at times) for the last couple years. All of my recent clothes purchases have been at Fashion Bug since that is pretty much the only brick and mortar store that carries clothes for women under age 80 up to size 32. I went to the mall a week ago and strolled into Lane Bryant since they were having a BOGO sale, and I figured, hey I'm down 30 lbs, let's see if a 28 fits!

IT DID! I got a cute jean skirt/skort (has attached shorts underneath the skirt), a pair of jeans, and some underwear. I am so excited I can fit back into Lane Bryant clothes, especially since Fashion Bug is going out of business and the stores will all be closed by January. So that is exciting news for me and is some motivation to keep going!

Week 13 Results

This past week was pretty good. Our results turned out well, even though we had some high calorie days. On Saturday afternoon we went to Holland State Park to hang out on the beach and swim in Lake Michigan.  Afterwards, we stopped at Captain Sundae and had delicious flurries. I swam around in Lake Michigan for probably close to two hours total so I definitely earned the flurry!

Katie
Current Weight: -30.2 lbs. (This week: -1.8 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -36.0 lbs. (This week: -1.4 lbs.)

Last week I decided to keep my exercise goal of two days for 30 minutes each. I met it, and then more than exceeded it with the swimming in Lake Michigan. This week I will continue the goal of two days for 30 minutes each. At some point I will increase this to three days but for now I don't want to push it. Two days is a week for two weeks in a row is amazing for me, so I'm hoping to continue it!

Next week we will do our weigh-in on either Tuesday or Wednesday. We will be at my parents' house for Labor Day weekend on Monday. I may stay until Tuesday, in which case we will do our weigh in and results post on Wednesday.

Later this week or next I will be doing a post about how I make shredded chicken for meals that call for it. It is a super easy way to make a ton of shredded chicken at once, with good flavor, and adds a low calorie protein source to a meal.

Week 12 Results

Last week was a much better week for me. I did not resort to old habits in the way I had the prior week, and I met my exercise goal! I exercised on two separate days for over 30 minutes each. I used my Wii Fit, which was fun and pretty easy exercise. So I will make the same goal for this week. I will exercise at least two days this week for 30 minutes each day.

It has been four weeks since we took measurements, so normally today would also include measurements. However, instead of taking them Sunday morning after we woke up, we took them Sunday night. I had to leave early Sunday for my cousin's bridal shower, so we did not have a chance to do measurements until that night. Because of this, the measurements did not come out the way one would expect given the weight we have lost in the last four weeks. A few of the measurements were higher than four weeks ago, which doesn't seem right. I think this is because we took them after eating and drinking during the day, so we were a bit bloated. So I am not going to count them. I also think we should switch to taking them every 5 weeks on the 5s (week 15, 20, etc.); it will make it easier to remember to take them and that extra week will lead to greater results.

Here are the weight results for this week!

Katie
Current Weight: -28.4 lbs. (This week: -1.8 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -34.6 lbs. (This week: -2.4 lbs.)

The results accurately show our efforts from this past week, so I was happy with them! We are going to keep on doing what we are doing, because it's obviously working!

Week 11 Results

Last week was a bit of a struggle for me. I gave in to old habits for a couple days and basically binge ate the way I used to. So I was not upset at my result this week, since I just wanted to at least stay even. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by my result considering how many terrible days I had.

I also did not meet my goal of exercising at least two days last week for 30 minutes a day. But I did get a lot of exercise on Saturday helping our friends move, so maybe that counts? Ha, not really. I never did find the willpower to force myself to exercise. So I will set that goal again this week. I feel more positive about this week so I am hoping nothing derails me from this goal.

Katie
Current Weight: -26.6 lbs. (This week: -0.4 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -32.2 lbs. (This week: -1.6 lbs.)

So. This week I will try really hard to ward off any desire to go back to bad habits, and exercise at least two days for 30 minutes each day. I just need to keep reminding myself of my reward (hopefully) at the end of all this - a baby and motherhood! I know babies are not easy so I'm not imagining this dream-filled world where everything is perfect, but my desire to become a mother has been extra strong lately. I think it is probably due to the fact that so many of my friends have children, and I am about six months from turning 30. I don't exactly have tons of time to dilly dally before we need to start trying!

Week 10 Results

Sorry for the one day delay with this post. Our internet wasn't working yesterday afternoon.

As I expected, Tony's huge weight loss last week was not sustained this week. He felt like he did pretty well last week so he was a bit surprised with his result, but I told him that he must not have drank enough water last Sunday which led to all that weight loss. This week just kind of normalized his results.

Katie
Current Weight: -26.2 lbs. (This week: -2.8 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -30.6 lbs. (This week: +0.2 lbs.)

So now that we are at 10 weeks, we can easily calculate our average weekly weight loss! I have lost an average of 2.62 lbs a week and Tony has last an average of 3.06 lbs a week. Pretty good! My goal is to lose 2 lbs each week, so I'm clearly on track. :)

I still have not added regular exercise to my schedule. I know I'll be fine with losing weight for awhile without adding exercise, but I will plateau. I plateaued in 2008 and I know I could have kept going if I had started exercising regularly. Since I would like to get lower than my plateau weight from 2008 and then stay there, I will need to exercise regularly and the sooner I get into the habit, the better! I have a Wii Fit I haven't used in almost three years, so I should try that, along with my Just Dance Wii game I did a few times in June. I really have no excuse since I am home all day, most days right now.

Between today and next Monday, I will make a goal of exercising for 30 minutes at least twice. I know that's pretty much nothing but it's better than my current exercise of zero minutes on zero days ;)  It is a doable goal and doable goals are what I need right now!

Week 9 Results

Another week, more results! Today's results are very odd. See for yourself:

Katie
Current Weight: -23.4 lbs. (This week: -1.4 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -30.8 lbs. (This week: -7.4 lbs.)

Yes, you read that correctly. According to our scale, Tony lost 7.4 lbs this week. He weighed himself multiple times to make sure the scale didn't go crazy on him. Don't ask us how Tony lost so much weight; we have no idea. Perhaps he overestimated the amount of calories he had at catered and pot luck work lunches; perhaps he got more activity than normal; perhaps all of his snacking (mainly junk food though) kept his metabolism up. Who knows?! Either way, that's what the scale said (I saw it myself!) so that's what we're going with.

Some of you may remember how disappointed I was at Week 2 when Tony lost 5.8 lbs and I lost only 1.4 lbs. Since my weight loss this week is the same as Week 2, and Tony's increased dramatically, you are probably thinking I'm super disappointed and depressed and am fighting feelings of wanting to give up.

That is absolutely not the case.

I think the big difference here is that I can better see the big picture than I could at Week 2. We're nine weeks in, just over two months, and my total weight loss is 23.4 lbs. That's awesome!! Plus, I'm really close to getting to the next 50 lb mark on the doctor's scale:
Obviously the next 50 lb mark is not 100 ;)

Tony just made it to the next 50 lb mark today. I just checked my weight on the old website we used to use, and it's been over two years since we were at this weight! That is fantastic and is something to celebrate.

Another reason I am not upset by Tony's rapid weight loss is that it is extremely abnormal to lose 1 lb. a day. It's not something that can be continued indefinitely and I am guessing his result next week will not be that fantastic. At least, I am hoping so! Today I really am fine with the extreme difference in our results but if this continues for multiple weeks, I may not be feeling the same way!!

I know last week I said there would be three posts and I ended up posting just two. This week's second post will be the first anniversary trip recap I promised for last week. Stay tuned!

Week 8 Results (With Measurements!)

Tomorrow marks 8 weeks since we started this weight loss journey, which means measurements results today!

Katie
Current Weight: -22.0 lbs. (This week: -3.0 lbs.)
Bust: -2.125" (These last four weeks: -1.375")
Chest: -1.875" (These last four weeks: -1.0")
Waist: -1.5" (These last four weeks: -1.0")
Hips: -3.5" (These last four weeks: -1.25")
Thigh: -1.25" (These last four weeks: -0.0")
Upper Arm: 0.375" (These last four weeks: -0.375")
Total Inches Lost: -10.625" (These last four weeks: -5.0")

Tony
Current Weight: -23.4 lbs. (This week: -3.0 lbs.)
Neck: -0.875" (These last four weeks: -0.0")
Chest: -3.75" (These last four weeks: -2.0")
Waist: -1.25" (These last four weeks: -0.75")
Hips: -2.5" (These last four weeks: -0.0")
Thigh: -3.5" (These last four weeks: -0.5")
Upper Arm: -2.0" (These last four weeks: -0.5")
Total Inches Lost: -13.875 (These last four weeks: -3.75")

I am totally shocked at our weight loss this week. It has only been five days since our last weigh-in and personally, I did not do very well with the eating. I did more snacking than necessary and was over my calories most days. My only theory is that perhaps last Wednesday we were retaining water from all the sodium-filled restaurant meals we ate on vacation, and then lost the water weight while we ate home cooked meals almost every day these last five days. Who knows!! Regardless of the reason, I am happy with the weight loss. We're both past the 20 lb mark now, which feels really great!

I plan on posting twice more this week. One post will be a recap of our anniversary trip (with photos!) and the other post will be a slow cooker recipe that I am making today!

Week 7 Results

We made it home from our first anniversary trip last night, and this morning we did our weekly weigh-in! As expected, results were not fantastic since we ate pretty poorly during our trip. But a loss is a loss so we'll take it!

Katie
Current Weight: -19.0 lbs. (This week: -1.0 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -20.4 lbs. (This week: -1.0 lbs.)

Sometime over the next week or so, I will post about our trip and include photos. Next Monday is another weigh-in along with measurements results again!

Week 6 Results

Time for a weigh-in! The last weigh-in was two weeks ago due to our holiday plans last week. Personally, I did not do well with the calories. I was significantly over most days while camping and while at my parents' house. Most of the extra calories were from alcohol but some were from desserts that I don't normally eat. However, I got a fair amount of activity while camping and at my parents' house so that helped a lot. I was still quite a bit over on net calories, but the results show that the activity clearly helped with the weight loss. So now I need to use that knowledge to force myself to exercise more often! My problem is that I have always hated exercise and therefore it is a huge struggle to find the motivation to actually get up and do it. Most of my activity at my parents' house was swimming and treading water when we would take the pontoon boat out into the deep part of the lake. I love swimming like that but don't have anywhere to do it at my own house. So I will just have to make the time and find the motivation to exercise on a somewhat regular basis.

Here are the results since our last weigh-in two weeks ago!

Katie
Current Weight: -18.0 lbs. (These last two weeks: -3.6 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -19.4 lbs. (These last two weeks: -3.4 lbs.)

So we're still losing weight steadily! I am happy with both of our results. We're nearing the 20 lb mark which seems like a bit of a milestone.

Next week's weigh-in will be on Wednesday. There will be another post on Thursday explaining why it will be two days late :)

Week 5: No Results This Week

As I mentioned in last week's post about our weekend and holiday plans, we did not have a weigh-in today. I am at my parents' house all week and Tony is at home with the scale. Since I was not able to do a weigh-in this morning, he chose not to. So we'll hope for double weight loss next Monday!

It is a very, very unusually hot week here in Michigan, which is nice for the holiday. I am so glad I am able to spend all week at a house on a lake, although the water is already too warm! We have to go out into the deep water to truly cool off where the water is still cool about 4 feet under the surface. It's almost like bath water at the surface. It usually does not get like this until early to mid August. But after an unusually warm (and barely snowy) winter, a hot couple weeks in March, and then the hot temperatures we've had the last month or so, I shouldn't be surprised! But this makes me worry about what's to come in August and Labor Day weekend! Hot tub temperatures at the surface?! Ick!!

Tony will be here Tuesday night through Thursday morning and then Friday night through Sunday. I am looking forward to having him here for my second favorite holiday of the year. My grandma's cottage is right next to my parents' house so we will have almost 20 family members here for 4th of July dinner. My youngest sister is organizing a kickball game for the 4th along with a flip cup game on the end of our giant dock:
Yes, that's 9 sections of dock there!

So it will be a very fun week! I will see if I can post again later this week. Next Monday we will definitely have a results post!

Week 4 Results (With Measurements!)

I think last week was the first week I didn't do a second blog post. Don't worry, we are still doing this! I just never got around to it, even though I have more free time now that I am a housewife/SAHCM (Stay At Home Cat Mom, heh) looking for a new full-time job. I plan on doing a second post on Wednesday about our plans for this weekend and the upcoming holiday.

Last week was a good week for us. Since we are nearing a month of doing this, our bad habits are losing their pull and we are making better choices. Tony made a big improvement and followed the calorie plan much better this week, and his results show that. Even when faced with difficult situations (a nacho bar at work), he avoided the temptation and stuck with his planned lunch. Although I told him he should have had the nacho bar, just in moderation, since it's not good to give up everything.

Since it has been 4 weeks since we started this, we took our measurements yesterday! Here are all the current stats:

Katie

Current Weight: -14.4 lbs. (This week: -2.6 lbs.)
Bust: -0.75"
Chest: -0.875"
Waist: -0.5"
Hips: -2.25"
Thigh: -1.25"
Upper Arm: 0"
Total Inches Lost: -5.625"

Tony
Current Weight: -16.0 lbs. (This week: -4.8 lbs.)
Neck: -0.875"
Chest: -1.75"
Waist: -0.5"
Hips: -2.5"
Thigh: -3.0"
Upper Arm: -1.5"
Total Inches Lost: -10.125

So far, so good! Stay tuned for another post on Wednesday. I will leave you with a weight loss inspiration quote I found on Pinterest:

Week 3 Results

Here we are again, another weight check-in! It has been 3 weeks already since we started this; I can't believe it! It is getting much easier to control calories now that we are 3 weeks in. I have personally been doing a much better job of self control and saying no to sweets and junk food. Tony will readily admit he still has some room to improve in that area. I have been trying harder to listen to my body and only eat when I'm actually hungry. Just because there's a bowl of chips or a tub of ice cream in front of me, doesn't mean I should eat it. If I just had dinner, I am probably not hungry and therefore I don't need to be eating junk food and sweets just because they are there.

Yesterday I experienced a little bit of a weight loss win. You know how jeans come out of the dryer extra tight and it takes a couple hours of wearing them before they stretch out a bit? In the past I would have to zip the zipper of my freshly dried jeans by laying down on my bed. Yesterday I succeeded in zipping them up while standing! I was a tiny bit happy, as this means my body is getting smaller. Next week we will have measurement results, and I imagine my waist measurement will show some improvement!

Without further ado, here are the results for Week 3:

Katie

Current Weight: -11.8 lbs. (This week: -3.6 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -11.2 lbs. (This week: +0.4 lbs.)

Tony's results this week were a bit of an eye opener to him. He now knows he needs to accept the fact that MFP is correct in the amount of calories he should eat each day and it will correctly adjust downward as he loses weight. He keeps talking about doing a blog post at some point, so maybe he will talk about this aspect of weight loss. I am not sure. He first needs to create a Blogger account!

I am very happy with my own results. We ate more restaurant meals than normal, so my calories were higher than they should be, but I did well overall and the results this morning show that. I feel better about last week now. This week will be even better because we only have one restaurant meal planned, and it will be Qdoba which is easily trackable and therefore we can make good choices.

In other news, I learned on Friday that my job was completely eliminated due to the restructuring and cost cutting my (now former) employer is going through, and therefore I am now laid off. It is a bit of a relief, as I wanted to leave the company and had been applying for the last 6 weeks or so. Now that I no longer have to go to work every day, I have plenty of time to focus on finding a new job! Also, the unemployment has come at the best time - summer! We have a couple long weekend trips coming up and then there is of course the 4th of July! Hopefully I will find something new (and better!) very quickly but if not, I will have lots of things to do to keep busy! Plus, Tony is really enjoying that I am now doing almost all of the housework :)

Week 2 Results (revised)

EDIT: Apparently my lack of being a morning person made me add 0.4 lbs to my weight loss. I actually lost 1.4 lbs, NOT 1.8 lbs. I don't know what I was thinking.

First off, for those of you who have not been to my parents' house, these are the aforementioned stairs:

You climb those to get to the basement of the house, then you must climb a floor of stairs to get to the main floor. If you're staying in an upstairs bedroom and want to get there, you must climb yet another set of stairs. To get to the main floor from the lake, it is probably around 3.5 flights of stairs. Not fun when you are carrying so much extra weight!!

Now onto the results!

We have been doing this for 13 days now, and so far, so good! Aside from our weekend in South Haven, we have been pretty good with staying under or around our daily calorie goal. To avoid having to deal with Tony getting a second helping of dinner, he has been eating more throughout the day and I eat less. That way we usually come to dinner with around the same calories left, and can eat the same amount. It makes me happier :)

Here are the results!

Katie
Current Weight: -8.2 lbs. (Loss this week: -1.4 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -11.6 lbs. (Loss this week: -5.8 lbs.)

This is when the laws of the universe start to work hard to discourage me. I had a much better calorie week last week than I did the first week. I was 435 calories over my weekly goal the first week and 232 calories under my weekly goal last week. Yet I only lost 1.4 lbs, and Tony lost a whopping 4.4 lbs more than me, and has already surpassed the 10 lb lost mark. This is incredibly discouraging for me. I am trying to get past it and realize that this is just how things work. But it is very hard to see, knowing that I am the one who has more to lose, yet I am losing at a much slower pace. It makes me want to either 1.) give up, or 2.) reduce my caloric intake further to the point where I am always hungry. I am definitely not going to give up, nor will I reduce my calories like that (that's just a recipe for disaster!). I will just have to push through these feelings of discouragement, remind myself that I LOST 1.4 LBS!!!, and stay on the weight loss train. This is very hard for someone like myself to do; I have never been an optimistic, upbeat, or overly positive person so focusing on the negative (I only lost 1.4 lbs.) is more natural to me than focusing on the positive - I lost a whole 1.4 lbs of this!:

I will try very hard to get past it, keep moving along this weight loss journey of ours, and hope that next Monday's results are more encouraging!

Week 1 Results

Technically it has only been 6 days since we started on this journey, but since I would like us to weigh on Mondays, we weighed this morning. The results are in! Drum roll please....

I love this gif and will have to use it again!!

(Remember we started at 0 for everything, since I am not comfortable sharing the actual numbers yet.)

Katie
Current Weight: -6.8 lbs.!!!

Tony
Current Weight: -5.8 lbs.!!!

I am actually quite surprised at our results. As you can see from our food diaries (links below) and will see in an upcoming post about our weekend in South Haven, MI, we did terribly over the weekend, especially Saturday. This morning I told Tony that all I want is to not gain weight. Boy, was I surprised when I saw the scale! But then I had to remind myself that typically the first week of a weight loss plan involves losing a lot of water weight. The next few weeks will be the real test as our bodies adapt to fewer calories. Also, for those of you who are also on weight loss journeys, keep in mind that the higher your weight is, the more you will lose each week. Percentage-wise, this is not a huge amount for us, but if a 150 lb. person lost 6-7 pounds in a week, that would be incredible!

To be honest, I'm surprised I lost a pound more than Tony. Men seem to lose weight much more easily than women, so I thought for sure he would be dropping the weight like crazy. My extra weight loss doesn't have anything to do with a difference in weight (when we started, he was exactly 1 lb more than me; now he is 2 lbs more), so I don't know how to explain it. Hopefully this will continue because in the past I have been discouraged by seeing Tony eat 600+ more calories than me a day and lose more weight each week. I know it's just how it is and as a shorter (and should be smaller) person, I should eat less, but sometimes it is difficult to see him get that second helping of dinner when I am already tapped out on calories for the day.

There will be a post tonight or tomorrow night (with pictures!) about our weekend trip, and then a post later this week about a weight-loss topic.

Thanks for following our progress and keeping us motivated!!

Day 1: Today is the First Day of the Rest of Our Lives

Please check out the "About Us" link above if this is your first visit here!

The title of this post is a cliche but it really is true. Every day is the first day of the rest of your life; why not make it the first day of a major lifestyle change? Why wait?

Last night we took our measurements with our new soft tape measure. This morning we weighed ourselves. Because I (Katie) am not comfortable with sharing the exact numbers at this point, we will start everything at 0 and post (hopefully!!) negative results each week. We will weigh each Monday morning and measure every 4 weeks on Sundays.
