Camping this Weekend and 4th of July

This weekend we are going camping with a group of 6 friends. We have camped with them the last two years and every year it is a ton of fun! We are trying a new campground this year. It is a shorter drive for all of us, which will be nice. It is actually only about 15 minutes north of my parents' house! We are going Thursday-Sunday which gives us two full days. Last year and the year before, we had rustic sites which meant we set up tents and didn't have any electricity or running water. This year at this new (to us) campground, they didn't have enough rustic sites left so we have electricity and running water at our sites. We are still using tents, and airbeds. There is no way I could sleep on the ground without my Aerobed :) Every year we tube down a local river for a few hours, which of course involves drinking. We're young adults, this is what we do! Although can we still call ourselves young adults? Three of the eight are 30/31 and the rest of us are 27-29. I guess that makes us real adults now :-\

Drinking involves calories, of course, which means this weekend will be tough. I've been saving calories the last couple days so that if I go over Thursday-Sunday, it hopefully won't affect me that much. I am planning on snacking minimally or not at all. The way our group does meals is that everyone signs up for one meal and then brings enough food to feed the group. This means we eat good meals instead of hot dogs over the campfire at every meal :) We are bringing pulled pork for one meal and bratwursts from 20th Century Market for the other meal. We are also bringing Jello shots for tubing ;)  So this weekend will be a struggle since I don't normally drink my calories, but hopefully I can stay at or under my daily calories, or at the very least keep my weekly calories at or under the total weekly amount.

On our way back home on Sunday, we are going to stop at my parents' house. My sister who lives in Charleston, SC will be home for a whole week and I haven't seen her in 6 months! Since I don't have anything to do in town next week, I will be spending the whole week at my parents' house, which will be great. As I mentioned before, they live on an inland lake so I plan on spending a lot of time on the dock relaxing and spending time with my sister. My other sister who lives in Chicago, IL will be there Wednesday-Sunday next week, so I will get to spend a lot of time with her as well. My eating should be fine since my mom always cooks healthy, well-balanced meals. She also has been really supportive of our weight loss efforts and every time we visit, she keeps wrappers of food she cooks with so we can see the nutrition facts and scan them into our MFP food diaries. The biggest obstacle will be drinking (it's a holiday!) and desserts, which will most likely be infrequent but still available at least a few times. However, I am feeling pretty confident I can have small amounts of dessert and keep things in moderation.

Since I will not be home from tomorrow afternoon until Sunday evening, July 8th, I will not be able to do a Monday weigh-in next week. Tony will be home with the scale, so he might do it. He is not sure. I think he should, but it's up to him. If he does, I will do a Monday post with his progress. My parents have a scale of course, but scales are not identical so my results will not be 100% accurate. I will probably weigh myself on their scale on Monday morning and again the following Sunday morning to see how I'm doing on their scale, but I won't be publishing the results until I'm back on our scale on Monday, July 9th.

At the very least, I will try to do some kind of post next week! Thanks for following our progress and keeping us accountable.

Week 4 Results (With Measurements!)

I think last week was the first week I didn't do a second blog post. Don't worry, we are still doing this! I just never got around to it, even though I have more free time now that I am a housewife/SAHCM (Stay At Home Cat Mom, heh) looking for a new full-time job. I plan on doing a second post on Wednesday about our plans for this weekend and the upcoming holiday.

Last week was a good week for us. Since we are nearing a month of doing this, our bad habits are losing their pull and we are making better choices. Tony made a big improvement and followed the calorie plan much better this week, and his results show that. Even when faced with difficult situations (a nacho bar at work), he avoided the temptation and stuck with his planned lunch. Although I told him he should have had the nacho bar, just in moderation, since it's not good to give up everything.

Since it has been 4 weeks since we started this, we took our measurements yesterday! Here are all the current stats:

Katie

Current Weight: -14.4 lbs. (This week: -2.6 lbs.)
Bust: -0.75"
Chest: -0.875"
Waist: -0.5"
Hips: -2.25"
Thigh: -1.25"
Upper Arm: 0"
Total Inches Lost: -5.625"

Tony
Current Weight: -16.0 lbs. (This week: -4.8 lbs.)
Neck: -0.875"
Chest: -1.75"
Waist: -0.5"
Hips: -2.5"
Thigh: -3.0"
Upper Arm: -1.5"
Total Inches Lost: -10.125

So far, so good! Stay tuned for another post on Wednesday. I will leave you with a weight loss inspiration quote I found on Pinterest:

Week 3 Results

Here we are again, another weight check-in! It has been 3 weeks already since we started this; I can't believe it! It is getting much easier to control calories now that we are 3 weeks in. I have personally been doing a much better job of self control and saying no to sweets and junk food. Tony will readily admit he still has some room to improve in that area. I have been trying harder to listen to my body and only eat when I'm actually hungry. Just because there's a bowl of chips or a tub of ice cream in front of me, doesn't mean I should eat it. If I just had dinner, I am probably not hungry and therefore I don't need to be eating junk food and sweets just because they are there.

Yesterday I experienced a little bit of a weight loss win. You know how jeans come out of the dryer extra tight and it takes a couple hours of wearing them before they stretch out a bit? In the past I would have to zip the zipper of my freshly dried jeans by laying down on my bed. Yesterday I succeeded in zipping them up while standing! I was a tiny bit happy, as this means my body is getting smaller. Next week we will have measurement results, and I imagine my waist measurement will show some improvement!

Without further ado, here are the results for Week 3:

Katie

Current Weight: -11.8 lbs. (This week: -3.6 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -11.2 lbs. (This week: +0.4 lbs.)

Tony's results this week were a bit of an eye opener to him. He now knows he needs to accept the fact that MFP is correct in the amount of calories he should eat each day and it will correctly adjust downward as he loses weight. He keeps talking about doing a blog post at some point, so maybe he will talk about this aspect of weight loss. I am not sure. He first needs to create a Blogger account!

I am very happy with my own results. We ate more restaurant meals than normal, so my calories were higher than they should be, but I did well overall and the results this morning show that. I feel better about last week now. This week will be even better because we only have one restaurant meal planned, and it will be Qdoba which is easily trackable and therefore we can make good choices.

In other news, I learned on Friday that my job was completely eliminated due to the restructuring and cost cutting my (now former) employer is going through, and therefore I am now laid off. It is a bit of a relief, as I wanted to leave the company and had been applying for the last 6 weeks or so. Now that I no longer have to go to work every day, I have plenty of time to focus on finding a new job! Also, the unemployment has come at the best time - summer! We have a couple long weekend trips coming up and then there is of course the 4th of July! Hopefully I will find something new (and better!) very quickly but if not, I will have lots of things to do to keep busy! Plus, Tony is really enjoying that I am now doing almost all of the housework :)

The Aforementioned FireRock Filet

As promised, here is the FireRock Filet that we both ordered last night:

The black slab that the filet is on is the FireRock. The sauces are (from L-R) onion marmalade, horseradish cream, and red wine demi glace. It was so tasty, as always! Although I forgot to ask if I could substitute a different vegetable for the asparagus, so Tony got double asparagus and I didn't have a vegetable. Oh well :)  I had a big salad for lunch yesterday so I'm not too worried.

Tony had a good birthday. I surprised him with a new 4-burner Kenmore gas grill and new grilling tool set! He was shocked. Here is the stock photo of the grill:

We plan to assemble the grill this weekend, and hopefully use it next week! I still need to do my meal plan for next week, so I'll be sure to include some meat we can grill.

Happy Birthday, Tony!

Happy birthday to my husband!! Tony is 31 years old today! We will be celebrating by going to one of our favorite restaurants, FireRock Grille at the public Stonewater Country Club just 3 miles from our house. They have one of the best birthday specials in town - free entree for the birthday boy/girl if you come on your birthday! He is talking about ordering the $13 Adult Macaroni & Cheese (it's delicious!) but I am trying to convince him to take advantage of the birthday special and order the $25 FireRock Filet: "A seared filet mignon with truffle mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a trio of sauces, onion marmalade, red wine demi glace, and horseradish cream." The filet (6 or 8 oz, I cannot recall) comes out seared on the outside and rare on the inside. You cut it up into smaller pieces and cook it on the "FireRock" that comes with it. The description of the "FireRock" is: "The unique volcanic “FireRock” holds at 500 degrees (which is where the restaurant name derived from), and allows you to cook your food selection the way you want it!! Each bite will be hot and flavorful allowing you to enjoy your meal to the fullest!" It is delicious, the sauces are amazing, and the sides are fantastic. We have both ordered it before. Having to "cook" your filet while you're eating makes me eat slower and be more aware of how full I am, which is good. I will probably order the FireRock Filet regardless of what Tony chooses.

FireRock Grille has a delicious nacho appetizer that we frequently order when we go there. But it of course adds so many calories and so much unnecessary food (and cost!) so I already told him we should not order any appetizers. They give you bread anyway, so we will definitely have enough food.

We haven't been there since mid-March when we took Tony's parents there for his dad's 60th birthday. I am really looking forward to it! I will post a picture tomorrow of the FireRock Filet as it looks when it's brought to the table, so that you can better understand the setup with the FireRock.

I baked cupcakes last night for Tony's birthday cake. I used a Betty Crocker French Vanilla cake mix and will be frosting them tonight with vanilla buttercream frosting made from scratch. I chose to make cupcakes instead of a cake so that we could easily freeze most of them rather than have a full cake sitting on our table all week while we have a slice each night. It is just too tempting to have that out and I felt that it would be easier to freeze cupcakes instead of a partially eaten cake. This way, we can take one out every so often when we feel like a treat. It also will lead to less impulse eating since it would take at least a few hours for the cupcake to thaw on the counter.

Just for fun, here is one of the first pictures taken of us back in February 2008:
We were 26 and almost 25 in this picture! Such babies!

Week 2 Results (revised)

EDIT: Apparently my lack of being a morning person made me add 0.4 lbs to my weight loss. I actually lost 1.4 lbs, NOT 1.8 lbs. I don't know what I was thinking.

First off, for those of you who have not been to my parents' house, these are the aforementioned stairs:

You climb those to get to the basement of the house, then you must climb a floor of stairs to get to the main floor. If you're staying in an upstairs bedroom and want to get there, you must climb yet another set of stairs. To get to the main floor from the lake, it is probably around 3.5 flights of stairs. Not fun when you are carrying so much extra weight!!

Now onto the results!

We have been doing this for 13 days now, and so far, so good! Aside from our weekend in South Haven, we have been pretty good with staying under or around our daily calorie goal. To avoid having to deal with Tony getting a second helping of dinner, he has been eating more throughout the day and I eat less. That way we usually come to dinner with around the same calories left, and can eat the same amount. It makes me happier :)

Here are the results!

Katie
Current Weight: -8.2 lbs. (Loss this week: -1.4 lbs.)

Tony
Current Weight: -11.6 lbs. (Loss this week: -5.8 lbs.)

This is when the laws of the universe start to work hard to discourage me. I had a much better calorie week last week than I did the first week. I was 435 calories over my weekly goal the first week and 232 calories under my weekly goal last week. Yet I only lost 1.4 lbs, and Tony lost a whopping 4.4 lbs more than me, and has already surpassed the 10 lb lost mark. This is incredibly discouraging for me. I am trying to get past it and realize that this is just how things work. But it is very hard to see, knowing that I am the one who has more to lose, yet I am losing at a much slower pace. It makes me want to either 1.) give up, or 2.) reduce my caloric intake further to the point where I am always hungry. I am definitely not going to give up, nor will I reduce my calories like that (that's just a recipe for disaster!). I will just have to push through these feelings of discouragement, remind myself that I LOST 1.4 LBS!!!, and stay on the weight loss train. This is very hard for someone like myself to do; I have never been an optimistic, upbeat, or overly positive person so focusing on the negative (I only lost 1.4 lbs.) is more natural to me than focusing on the positive - I lost a whole 1.4 lbs of this!:

I will try very hard to get past it, keep moving along this weight loss journey of ours, and hope that next Monday's results are more encouraging!

Why Are We Doing This?

I intended on finishing and publishing this blog post on Thursday night, but our internet went out at home so it had to wait until I could get to my parents' house whose internet works just fine. I didn't feel like swyping the rest of the blog entry on my Droid X2 smart phone :)

There are so many reasons to kick the bad habits and, once and for all, finally get healthy. But everyone has their own set of reasons. These are ours:
  • Health - heart disease runs in Katie's dad's family. High cholesterol runs in Katie's mom's family. Carrying around so much extra weight, even at a young age, only makes the situation worse when one is facing genetic predisposition to these conditions. I (Katie) saw my doctor in January for a routine physical, etc., and she recommended I get my blood drawn, not just for cholesterol but also for Type 2 Diabetes (adult-onset). That scared the crap out of me. I have always known Type 2 Diabetes was a possibility for obese people but just assumed my youth would keep me safe. Thankfully, the test came back negative so I dodged that bullet... this time. Hopefully by losing this weight and keeping it off, I won't have to worry about that anymore!
  • Appearance - this is a given for pretty much every obese person who isn't happy with their size. In the society we live in, appearances matter big time. I cannot wait for the day when I can walk into a room of strangers and not have to worry about the thoughts that are going through their heads the first time they see me. I want to be able to blend in when it comes to size.
  • Saving Money - to lose weight, one has to eat less. Eating less means we can buy fewer groceries, which means we are saving money! In the last year or so, I have become quite frugal and any kind of savings like this gets a gold star in my book!
  • Stairs - my parents live on an inland lake. The side of the lake they are on is hilly and all of the houses are roughly 3 floors of stairs up from the lake. I like to spend my summer weekends there, hanging out on the giant dock, swimming "in the deep" as we've been calling it since we could talk, and going on pontoon rides around the lake. Those stairs are pretty rough going up. When we were there for Memorial Day weekend, I never went up the stairs except when I was done being down by the lake for the day. Thankfully, lakes are nature's bathroom (you know you do it!!) and I never needed to go #2 while down at the lake.
  • Pregnancy - of course health is a factor here. It will be healthier for both the baby and myself if I am at a healthy weight. Appearance is a factor; don't most women want that cute baby belly that everyone oohs and ahhs over? I'm pretty sure at my current size a pregnancy would just make me look like I was gaining food weight in my stomach. Comfort is another factor. I can't imagine putting on more pounds at my current weight, and having to lug that all around town. Lastly, labor might be easier at a smaller weight. This isn't something I've researched, nor is it something I've been told, but it just kind of makes sense to me.
  • Parenting - toddlers and children have energy. A LOT of energy. We would not be able to keep up with their energy levels at our current weights. We are pretty confident that by losing all this weight we will be able to better handle sleepless nights with a baby and running around all day with a toddler. Hopefully :)
Monday will bring another results post, so stay tuned!!

Our Weekend in South Haven, MI

As I mentioned in a previous post, Tony and I spent June 1-3 in South Haven, MI. We had a fantastic time! The only bad part of our weekend was all the calories we consumed :(  We stayed at a B&B that served amazing breakfasts so it was very hard to stay under calories, even with the amount of exercise we got. But we still logged every single morsel of food and we are both confident we ate less than we would have if we hadn't been logging. We were consciously thinking about our calories all day every day, which helped keep them down. Although the ice cream on Saturday was probably a bad decision in hindsight, but you have to live a little sometimes, right? :)

I'm going to share a few pictures as I share what we did during our visit to South Haven.

We stayed in a Queen Deluxe room at the B&B:

We went to the lighthouse at the end of the pier both Friday and Saturday nights to watch the sunset on Lake Michigan:
Friday (so cold!!! 48 degrees and windy)

Saturday (much warmer and actual sunset)

We walked through the Festival of Cars and ran into Tony's uncles, Jim and Jeff, showing off their 1965 Ford Mustang. They are the ones who got Tony into Mustangs when he was a kid [gee thanks, guys!! ;) ]
Tony with his Uncle Jim (Tony's mom's younger brother) and the Mustang

We tried to go on the Friends Good Will ship on Saturday, but they canceled all of their Saturday sailings due to the wind and high waves. So we toured the Michigan Maritime Museum instead:
Tony standing inside the Evelyn S., a ship that is displayed out of the water

I'm a better height for that ship ;)

We went on the Friends Good Will ship on Sunday afternoon:
The ship at port before we left

Tony on the ship while we were out on the "high seas" (Lake Michigan)

Looking back at land

Tony went on this ship back in 2005, when he was 24, and never felt seasick. Now that he is almost 31, he got a bit queasy and lightheaded during the sail. Thankfully, there was a very nice couple who gave him their extra (and not needed) chewable Dramamine tablet, and all was well! We were so thankful that this other couple we had never met before actually came prepared! Next time we will bring the seasickness medicine and ginger pills we have leftover from our October 2010 cruise.

On the way home, we decided to stop at Saugatuck Dune Rides to ride a dune buggy over some sand dunes! This was unplanned but we started talking about it on Saturday. I had been on a dune buggy probably 20 years ago as a child, but Tony had never been. We had a lot of fun:
The dune buggy

Riding down a hill

Us at the top of a very tall dune with Lake Michigan in the background (the darker blue)

Overall, the weekend was fantastic! South Haven is now my favorite close by West Michigan coastal town. I loved it there. I told Tony that if South Haven had a Meijer store, I would consider moving there. But alas, they have a Wal-Mart and no Meijer, and that's just not going to cut it for me!! :) Our B&B, Victoria Resort Bed & Breakfast, was fantastic and we are already thinking of going back during the winter when the rates are lower and they offer special promos!

Thank you again to Tony for planning this wonderful Christmas present. I had a blast and got to discover a town in Michigan I had never been to!

Week 1 Results

Technically it has only been 6 days since we started on this journey, but since I would like us to weigh on Mondays, we weighed this morning. The results are in! Drum roll please....

I love this gif and will have to use it again!!

(Remember we started at 0 for everything, since I am not comfortable sharing the actual numbers yet.)

Katie
Current Weight: -6.8 lbs.!!!

Tony
Current Weight: -5.8 lbs.!!!

I am actually quite surprised at our results. As you can see from our food diaries (links below) and will see in an upcoming post about our weekend in South Haven, MI, we did terribly over the weekend, especially Saturday. This morning I told Tony that all I want is to not gain weight. Boy, was I surprised when I saw the scale! But then I had to remind myself that typically the first week of a weight loss plan involves losing a lot of water weight. The next few weeks will be the real test as our bodies adapt to fewer calories. Also, for those of you who are also on weight loss journeys, keep in mind that the higher your weight is, the more you will lose each week. Percentage-wise, this is not a huge amount for us, but if a 150 lb. person lost 6-7 pounds in a week, that would be incredible!

To be honest, I'm surprised I lost a pound more than Tony. Men seem to lose weight much more easily than women, so I thought for sure he would be dropping the weight like crazy. My extra weight loss doesn't have anything to do with a difference in weight (when we started, he was exactly 1 lb more than me; now he is 2 lbs more), so I don't know how to explain it. Hopefully this will continue because in the past I have been discouraged by seeing Tony eat 600+ more calories than me a day and lose more weight each week. I know it's just how it is and as a shorter (and should be smaller) person, I should eat less, but sometimes it is difficult to see him get that second helping of dinner when I am already tapped out on calories for the day.

There will be a post tonight or tomorrow night (with pictures!) about our weekend trip, and then a post later this week about a weight-loss topic.

Thanks for following our progress and keeping us motivated!!
